AES Cleanroom Technology‘s modular wall and ceiling panels have earned FM 4882 approval, a low‑smoke certification that addresses contamination risk in sterile manufacturing suites.
Certification expands protection beyond fire rating
The system already carried FM 4880 Class 1 fire approval, which measures how quickly flames spread across a surface. That metric does not capture the way smoke can drift through a sterile environment, settle on equipment, and force a shutdown for decontamination. The new rating evaluates how much smoke the panels release when exposed to fire, limiting the area that must be cleaned.
In pharmaceutical production, a fire may be extinguished quickly, but smoke can travel the length of a suite and coat product containers that never saw flame. Operators then face months of revalidation and lost output, even though the structure itself remains intact.

Company says the new rating helps keep therapies moving
Chris Miller, chief executive officer, said, “Patients are the reason this matters. Our clients make therapies that people depend on, and a contamination event does not just cost a facility; it interrupt supply to people with no alternative.” He added that standards are tightening and AES aims to stay ahead of those changes.
Shawn Reniker, senior vice president of operations, noted, “This approval came out of sustained investment in product development rather than a single test submission. Our team engineered a proprietary solution to meet the standard. For an operator, that means less smoke released in an event, a smaller area to decontaminate, and a shorter path back to production.”
Historically, many facilities relied solely on flame‑spread ratings, treating smoke as a secondary concern.

FM Global’s testing protocol subjects panels to full‑scale fire conditions and monitors smoke output. Approval is not a one‑time stamp; manufacturers must maintain conformity through ongoing oversight, giving owners and insurers a defensible specification.
The certified lineup includes the AES Profile 2‑in. wall panel, the AES Adapt ½‑in. liner, the AES Marquee 2‑ and 3‑in. ceiling panel, and the AES Parasol ½‑in. ceiling option. Submittal data are now publicly available, allowing designers to reference the low‑smoke certification alongside fire performance.
